Emergency Contraception (EC)
Emergency contraception is used as soon as possible after unprotected sex or when your regular method of contraception has failed.
Emergency Hormonal Contraceptives
There are two emergency oral pills.
Levonelle – this must be taken within 72 hours (3 days) of having unprotected sex.
EllaOne – this can be taken within 120 hours (5 days) of having unprotected sex.
Emergency Hormonal Contraceptives
IUD (copper coil)
The IUD, also known as the ‘copper coil’, can be fitted up to five days after having unprotected sex. This is the best method of emergency contraception.
Where can I get emergency contraception?
Emergency oral contraception is available free of charge from pharmacies, GP surgeries and sexual health clinics. The IUD needs to be fitted by a trained Doctor/Nurse and is available either through your GP or at your local sexual health clinic.
