Diaphragm and Caps
Diaphragm or a cap is a small dome fitted inside the vagina and covered with spermicide (a gel which contains chemical that kills sperm). They cover the cervix and create a barrier to sperm entering the womb.
How effective is the diaphragm and cap?
If used correctly with spermicide, caps and diaphragms are between 92%-96% effective, however the average efficacy is 84%. (This means if 100 women used a diaphragm or cap every day for a year, about 16 of them would have an unplanned pregnancy). Advantages
Most women can use a diaphragm or cap.
They are hormone free.
They can offer some protection against STI’s (sexually transmitted infections).
Disadvantages
Diaphragms and caps are less effective than other available methods of contraception.
It needs to be inserted before having sex and then left in for six hours after sex.
Some spermicides can increase the risk of HIV transmission.
